The Dojo Ink Standard: No Generic Designs

Martial-arts design workbench with ink sketches of gloves, hand wraps, makiwara, focus mitt, heavy bag and other training equipment.

The rule

If it wouldn’t earn respect on the mats, it doesn’t get printed. That is the entire design standard at TATSU WEAR. It is not a marketing line written after the fact — it is the first question asked before any artwork gets near a garment. Does it carry weight in a gym? Does a person training six days a week want it on their back? If the answer is no, the design dies in the folder it started in.

What we refuse to print

The generic fight-apparel market runs on a small set of recycled ideas. We opted out of all of them:

  • Stock art and clip-art “fighters.” The same posed silhouette on a hundred different shirts is not a design, it is a print order.
  • Humans and faces. No boxers, no celebrities, no portrait commissions. The art should outlive whoever is on it.
  • Religious symbols. Sacred imagery does not belong on a $32 t-shirt.
  • Borrowed kanji. Random characters chosen because they look cool destroy the meaning of the language. Our ink is drawn from the martial arts themselves — calligraphic strokes, discipline names, and the vocabulary of the dojo.

What we print instead

TATSU WEAR - hand-drawn ink artwork detail, brush calligraphy on textured paper

The language of the dojo is bigger than clip-art. It is the After Rounds state of mind — exhausted, composed, ready to go again. It is an iron record, the training log written in iron. It is staying after the bell because the work is not done (Last Ones Out). Every one of those names is a real part of fight culture, and every one of them fits the standard.

The standard costs nothing and filters everything

No generic designs means we lose nothing — the generic designs were never worth printing. What we keep is a catalog where every piece means something and the meaning survives the shipment. That is the Dojo Ink Standard. WEAR THE WAY.
